Listen, we can’t confuse persecution for our gospel witness with random, pointless bloodshed. The biblical mandate for a peaceful response is given to Christians specifically and with reference to our testimony, with those who identify with Jesus and suffer for it. The mandate of the Noahic covenant to punish murderers is given generally to all mankind; Gods common grace to restrain evil. It’s the force behind our impulse of self-preservation, and it is there to be upheld. When God’s designed moral order is transgressed by violence, expect a justifiable and righteous response of equal force. To avoid or neglect that as Christians starts to have an air of self-righteous piety, and it will certainly hinder rather than help our witness: “Sorry, my faith prevents me from lifting a finger to lend a hand or save your life. I’ll just watch.” Let’s guard against such unbalanced thinking. We are to be salt and light on the earth, which no doubt includes upholding God’s moral order and bringing the force of his righteous standard to bear upon society. Thank God for His law and mandate to preserve life!
